In Wake County, some home addresses are assigned to a school on a year-round calendar instead of a traditional one. Year-round schools in the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) run from July 1 to June 30 with shorter breaks spread through the year, while traditional schools start in late August and take a long summer break.
That matters when you buy a home. Two homes a few miles apart can be assigned to schools with very different calendars. Here is how each calendar works, how track assignment works and how to check a home's address before you buy.
The quick difference
- Traditional calendar. School starts in late August and ends in June, with a long summer break. The 2026-27 traditional calendar starts Aug. 24, 2026 (WCPSS).
- Year-round calendar. The school year runs July 1 to June 30. Students attend in blocks with 3-week breaks spread through the year (WCPSS).
- Same school days. Students on every year-round track attend at least 177 days. They also get the same major holidays as students on traditional and modified calendars (WCPSS).
WCPSS also has modified-calendar schools and a few other special calendars. You can see every calendar on the WCPSS Calendars and Attendance page.
How year-round tracks work
Most WCPSS year-round schools are multi-track. Each student is placed on one of four tracks. While one track is on break, the other tracks are in school. According to WCPSS, multi-track lets a school serve about 25% more students in growing areas.
- Tracks 1 and 4 generally have four 9-week quarters. Each quarter is followed by a 3-week break.
- Tracks 2 and 3 also have 3-week breaks, but the breaks fall during the quarter instead of after it.
WCPSS also posts a single-track calendar (Track 4 only) for some year-round schools. Each track has its own calendar on the WCPSS site, so check the exact track before you plan a move or a trip.
How track assignment works
WCPSS lays out these rules on its Year-Round Schools page:
- You rank your track choices. You share your preferences when you apply.
- The school makes the final call. It looks at your ranked choices, keeping siblings on the same track, and class size.
- Tracks are not guaranteed. Schools send track assignments in the spring.
- Tracks can change. A track can change from year to year, and when a student moves from elementary to middle school.
How a home gets a year-round school
WCPSS assigns a base school to every address. Some base schools are year-round. For example, for the 2026-27 school year, the Sweetwater and Abbington addresses we checked in Apex were assigned to Olive Chapel Elementary and Lufkin Road Middle, both on year-round calendars. You can read more in our Sweetwater and Abbington guides.
Year-round schools are also choice schools in Wake County. That means students from other areas can apply to attend one (WCPSS).
Can you switch to a traditional calendar?
You can ask. WCPSS has a "calendar change" transfer for students whose school is year-round or modified-calendar and who want a traditional calendar. Here is what WCPSS says about it:
- Approval is not guaranteed.
- In most cases, WCPSS does not provide a bus.
- Your student must be enrolled in WCPSS first.
- You can ask within 10 days of enrolling, or during the yearly transfer period.
- Schools with an enrollment cap, or that are expected to be more than 95% full, are not open to transfer students.
WCPSS says its board sees transfers as right only in "rare or exceptional circumstances." Plan as if your student will attend the assigned school.
Applying to a year-round school from another area
If your base school is traditional and you want a year-round calendar, you can apply during the choice window. For the 2027-28 school year, WCPSS lists these dates:
- Oct. 15, 2026 to Jan. 21, 2027: application window for magnet and year-round schools
- Feb. 19, 2027: results for all application windows
- March 1 to 12, 2027: second round application window
Only students enrolled in WCPSS can apply (WCPSS).
How to check a home's school calendar
- Use the WCPSS Address Lookup. Type the exact street address into the WCPSS Address Lookup. It lists the assigned elementary, middle and high schools.
- Check the right school year. Look at the year your student will start. Assignments can change from year to year.
- Check each school's calendar. An address can have a year-round elementary school and a traditional high school. Confirm each one on the WCPSS calendars page or with the school.
- Check for a cap, too. Some schools are capped, which means a new student may go to an overflow school. Read What Is a Capped School in Wake County?
- Check before your due diligence period ends. That way you decide with the facts in hand.
Questions to ask before you buy
- Is each assigned school for this address year-round, traditional or modified for the year my student starts?
- If a school is year-round, which tracks does it offer, and when are track assignments sent?
- What day does the school year start? Year-round schools start in July.
- Is any assigned school capped? If so, which is the overflow school?
- If I want a traditional calendar, is a calendar change transfer possible, and how would my student get to school?
