A short history

Carpenter Village takes its name from Carpenter, a rural crossroads community next to it. The Carpenter National Register Historic District, listed in 2000, covers about 210 acres around the junction of Carpenter-Upchurch Road and Morrisville-Carpenter Road. The Town of Cary describes it as a place that kept its rural crossroads character (Town of Cary). Its best-known building, the Carpenter Supply Store at 1933 Morrisville Carpenter Road, began as a frame store in 1895, added a brick building in 1916, and housed the Carpenter post office until 1933. Cary designated it a local landmark in 2010 (Town of Cary).

W&W Partners, led by Mike Hunter and Kyle Ward, planned Carpenter Village on about 400 acres as a traditional neighborhood development. According to CNU Public Square, the developer persuaded Cary officials that the design would cut car trips by about half, and the Village Marketplace was planned with 110,000 square feet of retail and 45,000 square feet of offices around a pedestrian plaza. Wake County records show the first homes in 1997, with 554 of the 723 homes built in the 2000s.

Amenities

Carpenter Village Association owns an amenity site with a bath house at 705 Carpenter Town Lane, built in 2000, plus common open space across the neighborhood (Wake County property records). Ask the association what the amenity site includes today and how access works. The village core along Gathering Park Circle has office and shop buildings, a child care center and apartment and condominium buildings (Wake County property records).
