A short history

In 1890, Julian S. Carr and Washington Duke attracted Trinity College, later Duke University, to Durham with offers of a site and funding, and the college moved from Randolph County in 1892. Development near the campus began with Carr and Richard H. Wright's Trinity Heights. In 1901, Wright announced a new, more efficient trolley system, and in April of that year Brodie L. Duke platted Trinity Park on his large tract at the campus's east border. The nomination calls the two neighborhoods among the city's earliest and most intact streetcar suburbs (National Register nomination, Trinity Historic District).

Brodie Duke's estate at the southeast corner of the district became the Durham High School campus, about sixteen acres (National Register nomination, Trinity Historic District). The Trinity Park Neighborhood Association, one of Durham's oldest neighborhood associations, runs the home tour, garden tour and other events (Trinity Park Neighborhood Association).

Homes in Trinity Park

Almost ninety percent of the buildings in the Trinity Historic District were classified as pivotal or contributing, and they span the late 1890s to about 1940. The bungalow is the most common house type, alongside Queen Anne, Colonial Revival and other revival styles and Foursquares. Houses are closely spaced on a street grid with uniform setbacks, and service alleys run through the blocks between Watts and North Duke Streets south of Urban Avenue. The ground is flat to the north and hilly toward the east edge, especially between Green Street and West Markham Avenue (National Register nomination, Trinity Historic District).
