A short history

The area began as Pin Hook, a travelers' rest on the Hillsborough Road (now West Main Street) about a mile west of Durham in the 1850s. In 1892, Benjamin N. Duke brought in William Allen Erwin as general manager of a new textile company funded by Erwin, the Dukes and George W. Watts, and the mill was named for Erwin. By the end of that year the mill village of West Durham was taking shape (Open Durham, Old West Durham).

Erwin Mills closed in 1986. Some buildings were torn down, and one of the larger mill buildings was renovated into apartments and offices, which helped spark new development in the neighborhood (Old West Durham Neighborhood Association, Erwin Mills history).

The West Durham Historic District covers about ninety acres of industrial buildings, company-built housing and an early twentieth-century commercial district on Ninth Street. The mill houses were built by the Erwin Cotton Mills Co. for its employees, and the nomination describes three types, all one-story frame houses (National Register nomination, West Durham Historic District).
