A short history

Orange County records show the first Southern Village homes in 1994 and most of the neighborhood finished by about 2001 (Orange County parcel records). In 2009, the Market Street Association described more than 1,100 residences of all types, along with a police substation, a public elementary school, a church and a day care, and a 450-space park and ride lot served by Chapel Hill Transit (Market Street Association letter to the Chapel Hill Town Council, 2009).

Market Street and the Village Green

Market Street has shops, offices and residential lofts around the Village Green, which has a large covered stone stage (Market Street Association letter to the Chapel Hill Town Council, 2009). Today there are restaurants, a coffee shop, the Lumina movie theater and a local market, with events and live music on the Green through the year (Visit Southern Village).
