A short history

Developers Mebane and Sharpe filed the first platted sections in 1926, and Donald Ross designed the golf course the same year, with later alterations by Perry Maxwell. The course loops around a Norman Revival clubhouse designed by Aymar Embury II with Milburn & Heister (National Register nomination, Hope Valley Historic District).

Architect George Watts Carr designed several early houses, including speculative houses built by Mebane and Sharpe. Nineteen houses believed to date from 1927 to 1930 survive, and construction picked up again in the 1950s (National Register nomination, Hope Valley Historic District; Open Durham).

The streets were intentionally built without curbs or sidewalks, and houses often sit deep on rolling, wooded lots (National Register nomination, Hope Valley Historic District).
